Shiro        Shiro on Injera

Shiro wot is another common type of wot in the Ethiopian cuisine. It is similar to the one above, Misir Wot, except the the Lentils is replaced by the seasoned roasted Beans/Peas/Chickpeas flour to thicken the stew.

Ingredients

1 big red onion (chopped)
1 clove of Garlic (chopped)
2 whole tomato (chopped)/Canned tomato (optional)
3 tbsp cup Cooking oil
3 tbsp. Berbere (spiced red pepper powder)/more or less as desired
1/2 cup roasted beans/peas/chickpeas powder
2 cups Water
Salt ( as needed)
Green pepper (optional)

Recipe

  1. Chop one big red onion and pour it in a pan, cook it until it turns a little brownish, occasionally stirring.
  2. Add a 1/3 cup cooking oil and, stir occasionally.
  3. Add the chopped garlic, and chopped tomato, cook the mix for 10 minutes occasionally stirring
  4. Add 3 table spoon Berbere (more or less as desired)
  5. Mix the the seasoned beans/peas/chickpeas powder with water in a bowl and pour it in the pan continuously stirring
  6. Cook the stew for 10-15 minutes, stir occasionally, you can add little water or cook it more if you want to make it thinner or thicker.
  7. Slice your green pepper and add it to the stew,and remove from heat/optional.

Cool it for a while and it is ready for serving. It can be served with Injera (Ethiopian flat bread), pita bread or tortilla. Some also serve it with rice.
